Created in 2539 B.E. (1996 A.D.) to commemorate the Golden Jubilee and the 50th Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Accession to the Throne, this prestigious issue was produced with the gracious royal permission of His Majesty King Rama IX through the Pariyatti Studies Foundation under the patronage of the Supreme Patriarch, Somdej Yannasangwon. It stands today as one of the most historically significant royal commemorative Buddhist amulets of the modern era.
The significance of this issue extends far beyond its commemorative purpose.
The lotus pedestal of every Phra Kring bears the official Golden Jubilee Royal Emblem, permanently linking the amulet to one of the most important milestones in Thailand’s modern history. Rather than being produced for commercial purposes, these sacred images were presented as commemorative tokens to devotees who contributed towards the charitable objectives of the project, making each piece both historically meaningful and deeply symbolic.
The creation ceremony itself reflected the importance of the occasion.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the sacred bronze casting ceremony held within the grounds of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram (The Temple of the Emerald Buddha), one of Thailand’s most revered royal temples.
The image portrayed is none other than Phra Phutta Navarath Bophit, a Buddha image of exceptional national significance.
Its origins date back to 2508 B.E. (1965 A.D.), when His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej personally commissioned the creation of a new Buddha image that would serve as the official provincial Buddha image for every province throughout the Kingdom of Thailand.
The responsibility of sculpting this important national image was entrusted to Professor Paithun Muangsomboon of Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. Working within Chitralada Royal Palace, the sculpture was personally supervised by His Majesty, who carefully reviewed and refined the model until he was completely satisfied before authorising the final bronze casting in 2509 B.E. (1966 A.D.).
For the first time, the creation of this commemorative Phra Kring Phra Phutta Navarath Bophit offered devoted Buddhists the rare privilege of possessing a personal representation of this nationally significant Buddha image—an opportunity that had previously been reserved only for provincial institutions and official state establishments.
To collectors, this issue represents a remarkable convergence of royal history, Buddhist heritage, and artistic excellence.
It commemorates one of the most significant milestones of His Majesty King Rama IX’s reign, bears the official Golden Jubilee emblem, reproduces one of Thailand’s most important royal Buddha images, and originates from a project conducted under the patronage of the Supreme Patriarch with royal approval.
