Yes, it is unofficially named after an assault rifle. But it is not without a proper reason.
The official term for this batch of Medallion is Rian Trai Mard, which refers to the duration of the blessing ceremony.
One Trai Mard is technically 3 months, but when an amulet is blessed for one Trai Mard, it is usually blessed during the annual 3 months rain retreat observed by monks thus making the blessing very important and holy.
This particular item is made during the rain retreat in Year 2513 B.E. (1970 A.D.)
Now, the question is why was it named Rian M16? There are many accounts but one particularly striking one that is frequently referenced to.
It was said decades ago, when the firing squad was still being used, a death row convict placed the Medallion in his mouth while facing the firing squad. Oddly, the firearms were jammed up and was unable to execute the convict.
It was only when they removed the Medallion from the mouth that the firearms worked normally.
Whether did this scenario happened or not, it’s hard to ascertain. But one thing is for sure, such a Medallion is one of the most iconic medallions made by Luang Por Pae and it’s highly sought after!
