The animal depicted is commonly described as a hedgehog, although Maen can also refer to a porcupine in Thai.

Renowned for its defensive spines, this remarkable animal naturally symbolizes PROTECTION, RESILIENCE AND THE ABILITY TO WITHSTAND ADVERSITY..

Within traditional Thai amulet beliefs, the Hedgehog variant is particularly associated with protective qualities, reflecting the animal’s natural ability to defend itself against danger.

Our featured specimen belongs to the distinctive PIM MAEN LEK TARN YANT mould, dating to 2460 B.E. (1917 A.D.).
